Anders Adlercreutz has been re-elected as chair of the Swedish People’s Party (SPP) during the party’s congress in Vaasa, running unopposed.
The education minister called for unity in Finnish politics, telling delegates that Finland needs leaders who “build bridges, not walls”. On Saturday, he said Finland has “too many racists” when addressing party members.
Adlercreutz has represented Uusimaa in parliament since 2015 and first became party chair in 2023. He was appointed Minister of Education in June 2024. Before that, he was Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering in the same government led by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.
His re-election comes at a time when the SPP, which represents Finland’s Swedish-speaking minority, is working to defend its position in national politics amid falling demographic numbers. The Swedish-speaking population now makes up about five percent of Finland’s population, down from six percent in 1990.
Sandra Bergqvist and Ramieza Mahdi will remain as vice chairs. Cecilia Ehrnrooth, a city councillor from Helsinki, joins them as a new vice chair.
