In a significant move towards digitalization, the Digital and Population Data Services Agency has announced that 1.1 million Finnish citizens have received their polling cards for the upcoming presidential elections exclusively in electronic format. This shift aligns with Finland’s progressive approach to integrating digital solutions into everyday governance and public services.
The electronic polling cards were distributed through the Suomi.fi Messages service to all eligible voters enrolled in the system. This digital transformation marks a departure from the traditional method of postal delivery, signaling a new era in Finnish election processes.
The advance voting for the first round of the presidential election commenced on 17 January 2024, allowing voters to cast their ballots at any public polling station during this period. However, on the actual election day, voters are required to visit the specific polling station mentioned in their polling card.
Maria Juka-Lahdenperä, Service Owner of Suomi.fi Messages, emphasized the importance of checking the Suomi.fi Messages for those who haven’t received their polling card by post. “It’s crucial to verify your polling station information, whether your notification is digital or in paper form. While the polling card isn’t mandatory for voting – an ID suffices – it is useful, especially for those voting in special conditions like abroad or in institutions,” she stated.
Otto Palmu, Election Manager at the Digital and Population Data Services Agency, further highlighted the necessity for voters to be aware of their designated polling station, especially on the actual election day, as they can only vote at the mentioned location.
Apart from the convenience offered to voters, the move to electronic notifications serves as a significant eco-friendly initiative. By opting for digital over paper, Finland is reducing paper usage and the associated environmental impact of its production and transportation. This approach aligns with the country’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Suomi.fi Messages is a secure electronic mailbox service provided by the Finnish government, facilitating communication between various authorities and citizens. It significantly reduces paper consumption and allows for easy and organized access to important documents and notifications.
As Finland continues to innovate and lead in digital governance, this initiative in the electoral process showcases the country’s dedication to efficiency, environmental consciousness, and the embrace of technology in enhancing civic engagement.
